When boxing, the mouthguard not only protects the teeth, but also the upper and lower jaw. It stabilizes the teeth and thus their anchorage and enables controlled breathing. The mouthguard should be able to absorb broader shock and impact energies, which is why deformable, softer materials are recommended.
